MRD offers a variety of different activities and weekly cultural, recreational and/or educational tours. Click on each tab to see a listing of activities/tours offered at this time.

In case of inclement weather, trips will be rescheduled if at all possible. Participants will be notified of any date changes. A full refund will be issued if a trip cannot be rescheduled.

David & Suanne Miller established Western Culture Creamery & Farmstead - Paonia- in 2015. Becoming USDA licensed in 2018. They are committed to producing the highest quality goat cheese from their small sustainable farm on the western slope of Colorado. Participants will tour the farm, mingle with some baby goats, and enjoy a cheese tasting.

The WCBG is home to several specialty gardens including the Cactus Garden, Antique Rose Garden, Children’s Secret Garden, the Western Heritage Garden, Celebration Plaza, Japanese garden and the gardens that surround our buildings. The tropical rainforest and butterfly house showcase tropical plants and orchids as well as koi fish, turtles, tortoises, and butterflies.

During the mid-20th century, hopeful pilots were inspired by the gleaming, all-metal monoplanes that filled the skies. Aviation was affordable, and a new airplane could be purchased for little more than the price of a new car. Spirit Engineering recalls that era to bring back affordable aviation with the SE-1. We will tour the facility and finish with lunch at Spoons Bistro and Bakery whose meals are made with fresh local ingredients. All proceeds go towards HopeWest hospice.

Enjoy a scenic mountain adventure in Ouray, including a visit to the fascinating Alchemist Museum, filled with unique antiques and curiosities. The trip also includes a walk up to Cascade Falls, where water tumbles dramatically beside the road, followed by a walk down to Box Canyon Falls, where a roaring waterfall plunges into a narrow quartzite canyon. This trip will include quite a bit of walking and standing.

Honey Rock Orchards is an organic orchard located in the Escalante Canyon, next to the Gunnison River. The tour will explain the working of the orchard, followed by a tour of the new cave suites. After the tour, pick fresh cherries off the trees, and enjoy a sack lunch next to the river.

Enjoy a day in beautiful Marble - located near the Maroon Bells and Ragged Wilderness areas. The Marble Sculpting Symposium brings together stone carvers from around the world to share the art and joy of stone carving in a non-competitive form. Spectators are welcome to move around the artists and ask questions. We will also visit the Marble Mill Site Park, historical church, and eat at the famous Slow Groovin BBQ restaurant.

Active Adult Hikes
The Mesa Creek trail is located in the Curecanti National Recreation Area near Cimarron, Colorado. The trail follows a short section of the Gunnison River near the outlet of the Morrow Point Dam past the mouths of the Cimarron River and Mesa Creek. The Gold Medal fishing waters of the Gunnison River are accessible from the trail. This is a 2 mile hike rated Easy/Moderate (some uneven surfaces and steps). Bring your fishing pole!

The Dillon Pinnacles are an eye-catching geological outcrop that stand sentry above the Lake Fork section of the Blue Mesa Reservoir near Gunnison, Colorado. The pinnacles are a breccia composition from mud flows, lava and exploding rocks from volcanoes that were active 30-35 million years ago. This is a 4 mile hike rated moderate.

The Aspen trail is located in the Plateau Division of the Uncompahgre National Forest near Montrose, Colorado. The trail begins off of Divide Road where it makes a loop with one side traveling along the rim of the plateau with occasional views to the south of Mount Wilson ( 14,252 feet) and Lone Cone (12,618 feet).This is a 5 -6 mile loop that is rated Moderate.

Main Canyon is located in the BLM's Wild Horse Area of the Little Book Cliffs near Grand Junction, Colorado. Beginning at the Coal Canyon trailhead the Main Canyon trail follows Jerry Creek up the canyon to Round Mountain. We will hike out and back a total of 5 miles on this moderate difficulty rated trail.

The Dave Wood Interpretive trail, aka Simms Mesa Loop, is located in the Plateau Division of the Uncompahgre National Forest near Montrose, Colorado. The trail begins at the Forest Service boundary on the Dave Wood Road where it follows a scenic loop that leads it through thickets of oakbrush and tall stands of ponderosa pines. This hike is 2 miles and rated as easy.

This 4-hour tour travels south on highway 550 through the most iconic section of The Million Dollar Highway. Depending on conditions, we will go to either Corkscrew or Yankee Boy Basin. At the top, our expert tour guide and owner of KJ Wood Distillers, will treat the group to tastings of his whiskey and gin made at his distillery in Ouray.

West Elks Wine Trail – The West Elks Wine Trail near Hotchkiss and Paonia is renowned for being home to some of the highest elevation vineyards in North America. It is known for producing high-quality, aromatic and acidic cool-climate wines, along with wine cider. We will experience the taste of 3 different wineries/orchards during our visit.
