Generation Wild Programming

Generation Wild is a statewide initiative created by Great Outdoors Colorado to connect kids and families with outdoor experiences and inspire time in nature. Partners of Generation of the Wild of the Uncompahgre (GWU) offer low-cost programs, expand equitable access, and support local youth and families through activities and partnerships that build lifelong outdoor connections.

The members that make up the Montrose-area Generation Wild of the Uncompahgre coalition are committed to providing fun, long-lasting, and affordable outdoor programs that increase access to the outdoors, break down barriers, and create a sense of ownership and stewardship towards Colorado's outdoor areas and activities.

Montrose Recreation District 

Family Camping - MRD + CCA

Our Family Camping Program is for families who want to explore the outdoors but aren’t sure where to start. Hosted by Colorado Canyons Association and MRD—come learn camping basics and create lasting family memories!

Dates: Saturday, June 6 @ 10:00am - Sunday, June 7 @ 12:30pm

Registration Deadline: May 31

Ages: 5+

Cost: $20/family (Includes gear, transportation, food, and entertainment)

Location: Meet at Flex Rec, camp at Cottonwood Grove Campground

Intro to Paddling w/ Trigg Skoe

An intro to paddling basics, water safety, and river awareness through hands-on instruction and practice. Participants build confidence, master essential strokes, and gain skills for safe kayaking adventures. Instructed by Trigg Skoe. Spend 3 days in the MRD pool learning the basics, and then 2 days on the Uncompahgre River putting those skills to the test!

Pool Days: Saturdays, June 13-27 - 9:00-10:30am

River Days: Saturdays, July 11-18 - 10:00-2:00pm

Registration Deadline: June 9

Ages: 12+ (ages 12-15 must enroll with a parent)

Cost: $200/person (Includes 4.5 hours of training, 8 hours on the river, and gear rentals)

Peak Baggers Club

Join our peak-summiting hiking club for teens to explore and conquer local mountains and stand on top of peaks most people only see from town. Program will include mountain safety, fitness, and skills like scrambling and route finding. Participants should have some hiking experience.

Days: Mondays, July 20-August 10

Time: 7:00am-5:00pm - Times will vary depending on the length and difficulty of the hike, drive time, and other topics to be covered throughout the day. 

Ages: 13-18

Cost: $40/person

Voyager + SJMA Overnight Camp at Top of the Pines

Empower young adventurers with wilderness skills and awareness through immersive trips in the San Juans. Based at Top of the Pines, campers embark on day and overnight adventures to build skills, connections, and lasting memories.

Dates/Times: Monday, July 13 at 9:00am - Wednesday, July 15 at 3:00pm

Ages: 12-15

Cost: $180/camper (scholarships available)
