Frequently Asked Questions
Are we part of the city?
How did we get started?
No, unlike many Parks and Recreation programs,
we are a separate entity known as a special district.
The Montrose Recreation District is not a part of
the City or County of Montrose.
Over 50 years ago, a group of citizens, many
whom were Veterans, came together and
fundraised and eventually opened an outdoor
pool next to Safeway.
Where do we get funding?
What facilities do we own?
The Montrose Recreation District receives funding
from property taxes, Specific Ownership taxes,
Colorado Lottery, sponsorships and patron fees.
Some of our programs are made possible from
business and personal contributions.
The Montrose Recreation District owns the
Aquatic Center, Holly Park including the tennis courts,
McNiel Fields and Ute Park. We also own the small
"farmhouse" near McNeil, which is our Administration Office.
We are also partnering with the City of Montrose to develop the Cerise property into multi-purpose playing fields.
Why do we host MRD
programs in rented facilities?
How many people participate
in MRD programs?
With the exception of the indoor swimming pool at the
Aquatic Center, the Montrose Recreation District does
not own any indoor programmable space. We rent
space at Montrose High School, middle and elementary
schools, Montrose County Fairgrounds' Friendship Hall,
various independent fitness studios and Hilltop in
order to provide the community with indoor sports and activities.
The Montrose Recreation offers over 300 programs
every year. Over 5,700 individuals of all ages
participated in our recreation programs last year
and there were 53,725 visits to the Aquatic
Center - that's not counting the Montrose Marlins
practices and swim meets or MHS PE classes.

What's the progress on a Community Recreation Facility?
In the past few years the Montrose Recreation District and its Board of Directors have made a community recreation facility a priority. We conducted community surveys in order to discover what the citizens of Montrose wanted and needed in their facility. However, we discovered a stand alone recreation center was not yet feasible for Montrose. With the project estimated at over $21 million, many citizens although in support of a recreation center, felt the project was just too expenisve. We listened to the community and went back to the drawing board to develop the Aquatic Center Expansion.
In November of 2007, Montrose voters rejected this proposal. We are not giving up on our goal to provided Montrose with quality recreation space however. Recreation is a neccessity for our community and we are determined to continue providing it. Please feel free to contact us with comments or suggestions. We welcome your feedback, 249-7831 ext. 18.
